A veterinary technician is an important part of the veterinary medicine, providing assistance to veterinarians in a wide variety of tasks. Among the many responsibilities of a veterinary technician include routine lab tests, assistance in surgical and dental procedures, and medicine administration. An individual can start to become a veterinary technician through attendance of an AVMA or CVMA accredited school. All the knowledge and experience a veterinary technician gains will be crucial in his animal healthcare responsibilities. Successful completion of a certification exam is also necessary in order for a veterinary technician to practice his profession. A veterinary technician can be certified, licensed or registered depending on the regulations mandated by his state of residence. There are other fields a veterinary technician can choose to specialize in such as neurology, dentistry and cardiology. A veterinary technician usually works in animal clinics, although he can also work in government offices, research facilities and schools.
